Sky Player
Sky Player was launched in January 2006. The service allows customers to download video onto their PC through a broadband internet connection. As of November 2008 the software also allows the live streaming of selected Sky TV channels. The VoD content comprises sport highlights, news, feature-length movies and TV programmes. This content is allowed to be viewed for a limited number of days and is protected by digital rights management software provided by Microsoft, and therefore cannot be copied to disc or played after the date carried by the licence. The service is available at no extra cost to Sky TV customers with accessible content matching subscribed TV channels (some content require additional payment on a pay-per-view basis). Other users can access by subscribing to Sky Player or on a pay-per-view basis.
This service was temporarily suspended after the release of a FairUse4WM, a programme which can remove said DRM protection. The service resumed on 16 October 2006, with users being informed of the change by email.
On 25 November 2006, Sky announced the rebranding of Sky By Broadband as Sky Anytime on PC. Sky also released an upgrade for the Sky By Broadband client which included a rebranded interface and a new Pay-Per-View service which includes movies and US television shows.
On 16 May 2008, Sky rebranded the software again, changing the name to Sky Player and the updated software to included live simulcasts of Sky News and Sky Sports.
The service was expanded to the Xbox 360 on 27 October and to Windows Media Center equiped Windows 7 PC's on November 19. Users don't require an actual Sky TV subscription; all that is needed is a broadband connection, an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription for the Xbox 360 version, and to register through the Sky Player website. The Xbox 360 service will have a function called Party Mode which will allow you to have your Xbox Avatar in a virtual room with all your friends whilst watching live sports or films. On the Xbox 360 version launch day, however, there was a technical fault due to the high level of demand which meant the content was not available. The service was delayed and has been available since mid-october.
